Supporting Voluntary Action in the Canterbury Distirct

Suppporting Voluntary Action
in the Canterbury District

WHAT IS VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering means giving your time freely to benefit others.  It should also be enjoyable, worthwhile and of benefit to you as well as the organisation you volunteer for.

Organisations who recruit volunteers must be in the ‘not-for-profit’ sectors ie: charities, voluntary & community groups, public sector, social enterprises or any other type of  not-for-profit organisation.

There are a number of ways to volunteer be it in person, virtually or even via opportunities which last half an hour or less (micro volunteering). How you choose to give your time as a volunteer is entirely up to you – volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual!

A good place to start  is via our online database of local volunteering opportunities.

There are numerous benefits to be gained by volunteering including:

  • Learning new skills
  • Increasing your confidence
  • Adding to your CV
  • Getting a reference
  • Doing something rewarding
  • Staying active and healthy
